Powerball Ticket Worth $241M Jackpot Sold in Iowa

Powerball Ticket Worth $241M Jackpot Sold in Iowa

VIDEO: Powerball $240 Million Jackpot Winner is in Iowa
A Powerball ticket sold at a Cedar Rapids grocery store this week is worth $241 million, but whoever bought it has yet to claim the jackpot, Iowa lottery officials said Thursday.
The ticket, the state's biggest lottery winner to date, was sold at a Hy-Vee on Edgewood Road in Cedar Rapids. Store Director Jamie Franck was presented Thursday with the $10,000 bonus check the store receives for selling the winning ticket.
"I'm just hoping it was one of those customers that come in every single day or every single week making their purchases just thinking maybe today's the day," Franck said at a lottery news conference. "And this might be their lucky day that they get to find out that they're a multimillionaire."
Franck said the store's bonus will go toward its bottom line and, because Hy-Vee is an employee-owned company, employees also will see some of it in their own bonus checks.

Chris Brown and Drake

Makes her feel like she's the only girl in the world!
After Chris Brown and Drake -- or at least their entourages -- sparked a violent brawl between their entourages at a downtown NYC club early Thursday, it was widely assumed that the fight was over one very special lady: Rihanna, Brown's ex and Drake's pal, collaborator, and rumored hook-up.
Although the "We Found Love" singer had been spotted out and about in NYC earlier in the week, she wasn't at W.i.P. (where fellow stars like Mary J. Blige, Neyo, Maxwell and others were spotted Thursday evening) when a massive fight broke out between Brown and Drake's respective posses.
But she definitely heard about it, a source tells Us Weekly. Rihanna "loves this!" the source says. "Men fighting over her? Are you kidding? Of course. [She] loves the drama."

Brown, 23, tweeted a photo of a serious gash on his chin after a bystander (said to be a member of Drake's entourage) threw a bottle at him during the melee. ("Chris and Drake never got in each other's faces," an observer says. "It was entourage versus entourage, never Drake versus Chris.")
Rihanna "got text messages from everybody telling her what happened right after it went down," the source explains. "She just laughed. She's spoken to both of them and just thinks it's crazy. She's glad she wasn't there though!"

As previously reported by Us, the chart-topping singer, 24, has been secretly hooking up with abusive ex Brown for over a year -- and has been romantically linked to Drake, 25, in the past.
"She wants to be friends with both of them," the source explains.
For his part, "Take Care" rapper Drake denied "any wrongdoing" at W.i.P. in a Thursday statement to Us. "He was on his way out of the club when the altercation began. He did not engage in any activity which resulted in injury to person or damage to property," his rep said

Niagara Falls Tightrope Walk Is a Ratings Bonanza for ABC

Niagara Falls Tightrope Walk Is a Ratings Bonanza for ABC

Nik Wallenda during his tightrope walk across the Niagara Falls.
The live telecast of a tightrope walk over Niagara Falls on Friday night did exactly what ABC hoped: it lifted the network to a first-place finish for the night and provided evidence that there’s an audience out there hungry for big television stunts.
ABC easily surpassed NBC, CBS and the other broadcasters for the night. From 10:30 to 11 p.m., when the daredevil Nik Wallenda finished his walk, ABC netted 13.1 million viewers, according to preliminary Nielsen ratings.
According to ABC’s own research, the network had not seen a rating that high on a Friday in nearly five years. Shows on Friday night typically earn low ratings, especially in the summertime.
Executives at ABC News, which produced the event, will surely cite the ratings the next time they propose a big network stunt — and odds are it won’t be very long. Friday’s broadcast ended with Mr. Wallenda telling viewers at home, “I just happen to have the permit to be the first person in the world to walk a tightrope over the Grand Canyon. And we’ll start up that process very soon.” Josh Elliott, one of the hosts of the broadcast, responded, “Well, Nik, if you’re looking for a network, I think I have one in mind.”
The half-hour walk was stretched into a three-hour-long extravaganza by ABC News: the 8 p.m. hour looked back at “mega stunts” of the past, the 9 p.m. hour previewed Mr. Wallenda’s walk over the falls, and the 10 p.m. hour showed the walk itself. On any given minute between 9 and 11 p.m., 10.1 million viewers were watching, according to Nielsen. Mr. Wallenda made the stunt look easy, practically running the last few steps.
It was “a truly beautiful spectacle,” James Goldston, the ABC News executive who was overseeing the production at Niagara Falls, wrote in an email message minutes after Mr. Wallenda stepped off the highwire and into Canada.
The broadcast itself was “tons of fun,” he wrote, but also “incredibly technically complex,” with production crews, hosts and cameras in both the United States and Canada.
The broadcast was a huge opportunity for the network news division, but also a risk, given the possibility that Mr. Wallenda might be injured or killed — which is why it was shown with a five-second delay. ABC also required Mr. Wallenda to wear a harness, which he openly disdained, even remarking at one point during his walk that he felt like a “jackass” for having to wear it. But without ABC, he might not have been able to walk at all; the network helped to pay for the event.
Not surprisingly, the television audience gradually grew as the night went on. ABC had a 1.2 rating among 18- to 49-year-olds at 8 p.m.; a 1.3 rating at 8:30; a 1.7 rating at 9; and a 1.8 rating at 9:30. At 10 p.m., as Mr. Wallenda started his walk, the rating spiked to a 3.1; at 10:30, it topped out at a 3.4.
The walk was a momentary phenomena on Twitter and Facebook, as viewers watched and chatted about it simultaneously. Data collected by ABC after the broadcast showed that there were 353,000 messages on Twitter about the high-wire walk between 10 and 11 p.m. — exponentially more than the news division has seen for other special events like concerts. The Twitter messages peaked when Mr. Wallenda stepped into Canada, with 14,000 messages a minute.

Lindsay Lohan tweeted a reminder to herself today, hours after paramedics were called to the starlet’s Marina del Ray, Calif., penthouse by producers of her new movie, “Liz and Dick,” who feared the actress was unconscious after she did not come out of her room as scheduled.
“Note to self…after working 85hours in 4days, and being up all night shooting, be very aware that you might pass out from exhaustion + 7 paramedics MIGHT show up @ your door…Hopefully theyre cute. Otherwise it would be a real let down,” @lindsaylohan tweeted.
Lohan’s rep, Steve Honig, said the actress was asleep when the call was made. He blamed her inability to wake up on exhaustion and dehydration from long days on set.
“She was on set last night at 7 p.m. and worked through the night until 8 a.m. this morning,” he said. “She took a nap before shooting her final scene. Producers were concerned when she did not come out of her room and called paramedics as a precaution. Lindsay was examined and is fine, but did suffer some exhaustion and dehydration.”
Honig added, “Lindsay was never taken to a hospital; reports to the contrary are false. She is resting now and is hoping to be back on set later this afternoon.”

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s office described Lohan’s condition as “groggy” and said she’s “OK as far as we know.”
Lohan has been to rehab multiple times for drug and alcohol abuse. In March, she was taken off probation from her 2007 DUI case.
The actress has had a rough run of late. Last week, she totaled her Porsche by driving it into a dump truck on the Pacific Coast Highway.

Ronan Farrow celebrates Father's Day at Woody Allen's expense

Ronan Farrow celebrates Father's Day at Woody Allen's expense

Ronan Farrow with his mom, Mia Farrow.
Ronan Farrow certainly didn't forget dad Woody Allenon Father's Day, despite their reported decades-long estrangement.

"Happy father's day— or as they call it in my family, happy brother-in-law's day," Ronan tweeted Sunday.

Mom Mia Farrow got in on the fun too, retweeting Ronan's missive and adding the word, "Boom."

Things got, well, awkward between Allen and Mia Farrow in the early '90s, after Allen started up an affair with Soon-Yi Previn, Mia's adopted daughter with Andre Previn. Woody and Mia, who were longtime romantic companions but had never married, broke up in 1992; Woody married Soon-Yi, who was never legally his stepdaughter, in 1997.

Soon-Yi, now 41, and Woody, 76, who have adopted two daughters, appeared at the Los Angeles Film Festival on Thursday for the premiere of the writer-director's "To Rome With Love."

Ronan — birth name Satchel — was 5 at the time of his parents' breakup. If that seems a bit young to get upset about what he has called "such a moral transgression," remember: Ronan, now 24 and a Rhodes Scholar, entered college at 11 and was accepted into Yale Law at 15, though he deferred enrollment for a few years so he could do a little work with the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations.

It's all relative. No pun intended

Jack Osbourne's Multiple Sclerosis Diagnosis: What Does It Mean?

Jack Osbourne's Multiple Sclerosis Diagnosis: What Does It Mean?

image?.Caption
A few tell-tale signs are what clued Jack Osbourne into the fact that something was seriously wrong with his health. The son of hard rock icon Ozzy and "America's Got Talent" judge Sharon Osbourne revealed earlier this week that he has been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis
 earlier this spring.
According to the "Today Show," Osbourne, 26, decided to visit a doctor when he noticed tingling in his extremities and suffered a 60 percent loss of vision in one eye.
MS is an autoimmune disease that attacks the central nervous system and which currently has no cure, but is very treatable. It causes inflammation in the brain and spinal cord resulting in the loss of myelin, the insulation around nerves. Among the symptoms are: loss of vision, numbness, tingling, excessive fatigue and weakness. The effects can range from mild to debilitating, but experts said that with the right mix of medications and doctors Osbourne has a good chance at leading a fulfilling life.
"The prognosis now is better than it's ever been," neurologist Dr. David Snyder, director of the Multiple Sclerosis Center at New York Hospital Queens told the morning show. "We have treatments we just never had before."
The disease can affect any organ system in the body, according to NBC chief medical editor Dr. Nancy Snyderman. "Every nerve has insulation around it and MS attacks that insulation so that the electrical impulses from the brain to tips of fingers and toes don't work as well," she said. The key for Osbourne is keeping in tune with any changes to his body and getting on the right mix of medicines to help slow down the progress of flare-ups.
"Now somebody on medication, treated early, we're very hopefully we're interrupting the natural course of the disease," Snyder said. "Patients are leading full lives, with families, jobs and travel."
While some people have not responded well to treatments, he said a large number do and lead full, if slightly modified, lives that may require a cane or other precautions. Around 400,000 people in the U.S. have MS, with 200 new cases diagnosed each week. Like other autoimmune diseases, MS affects more women than men, affecting females two to three times more than men.
Osbourne is right in peak age range in which most cases are diagnosed (late teens, 20s and 30s), which is why his revelation is not a surprise to experts. Snyder said that given Osbourne's age, his prognosis is relatively bright.

Microsoft Surface Tablet: 5 Questions

Microsoft Surface Tablet: 5 Questions

Microsoft left a lot of unanswered questions after following Apple into the tablet hardware business Monday with its new Windows 8-based Surface PCs/tablets. The software maker introduced the new family of devices during an event in Los Angeles.
Microsoft said the new Surface tablets are meant as companion hardware for Windows 8--the most dramatic overhaul of the OS since Windows 95. Company CEO Steve Ballmer said: "We wanted to give Windows 8 its own companion hardware innovation." Windows 8 is expected to be available in the fall.
The Surface brand was originally used for a tabletop touchscreen computer Microsoft launched in 2007.

Early Impressions Are Positive

Looking at the spec sheet, the new devices sound promising and early impressions are generally positive. The new tablets will come with a 10.6-inch display, a kickstand for tabletop viewing, and a super-thin keyboard case that attaches to the device with magnets.
Surface will come in two flavors: Surface with Windows RT and Surface Pro with Windows 8 Pro. Windows RT is the version of Windows 8 designed for ARM processors; it includes the new touch-friendly Metro-style interface, as well as a limited version of the traditional Windows desktop for running Internet Explorer and Microsoft Office.
Surface tablets with Windows RT will include a micros slot, USB 2.0, and a Micro HD port. The devices will weigh about 1.5 pounds and be about 0.36-inches thick. Microsoft did not say which processor the Windows RT device would have, but did say the tablets will come with your choice of 32GB or 64GB of storage.
Microsoft Surface tablet with Metro interfaceMicrosoft Surface tablet with Metro interfaceThe Surface Pro tablets will be Intel-based with access to the Metro UI as well as to the fully functional Windows desktop and will come in 64GB and 128GB versions. The tablet will have a microSDXC card slot, USB 3.0, and Mini Display Port. The Surface Pro will weigh just under two pounds and be about half-an-inch thick.
That's what we do know about Surface, but there are also a few interesting questions left to answer.

How Much Will It Cost?

Microsoft was short on details when it came to pricing the new Surface tablets. The company said the Windows RT version of Surface would cost about the same as comparable slates. Surface Pro, meanwhile, would be priced similar to comparable competitive Ultrabook PCs.
Let's assume that comparable tablets for the Windows RT version mean the market leader, Apple's iPad. So the entry-level Surface models should cost about $600 for the 32GB version and $700 for the 64GB model.
How much Surface Pro devices will cost is another issue entirely since Microsoft wants to compete with Ultrabook PCs. When Intel introduced the new class of portable laptops in spring 2011, they were supposed to be priced under $1,000. But that dream is only now becoming a reality with second-generation Ultrabooks.

Samsung Series 9Samsung Series 9Devices like the Lenovo U310 and 410 are priced at $750 and $800 respectively, Vizio just released a line of Ultrabooks that start at $900, and the base model for Sony's new Vaio T13 costs $800. Will the Surface Pro be priced under $1,000 as well, or will Microsoft reach for a higher cost similar to the Samsung Series 9 ($1,400-$1,500) or theAsus Zenbook Prime UX31A ($1,100)?

When Will It Arrive?

The Windows RT version of Surface is due to come out during the general release of Windows 8, which is expected in the fall, around October. The Surface Pro is scheduled for release about three months later, meaning in early 2013. Microsoft did not offer any specifics beyond these general time lines.

Will Microsoft Ever Give Up on the Digital Pen?

Bill Gates at the 2002 introduction of Windows Tablet PC edition with digital penBill Gates at the 2002 introduction of Windows Tablet PC edition with digital penMicrosoft couldn't resist giving a nod to its legacy tablets (convertible notebooks) by including digital pen functionality with the Surface Pro. But haven't consumers already spoken and said, "Thanks, but no thanks" to digital pen input technology by adopting the finger-driven iPad in droves?

What About 3G/4G Connectivity?

Microsoft didn't say whether the new Surface devices would include mobile data. Perhaps the company didn't want to discuss that issue while it works on developing carrier partnerships for its new tablets. Wi-Fi only devices are great, but many people--especially those looking at the Surface Pro for work--will want the option of a higher-priced device that comes with 3G/4G connectivity.

Will the Surface Fulfill the Promise of Apple's iPad?

When technology critics speculate about the future of the iPad, many wonder if it could one day replace the home PC for many users. In some ways it has already done that for users who just want a computer that can do casual Web browsing, e-mail, social networking, and video streaming. There are also some professionals using the iPad instead of a laptop at work, including programmers, journalists, and small business owners.
Apple's latest iPad tabletApple's latest iPad tabletBut while the iPad is becoming a popular choice for the road, many people are still holding on to their laptops. That could change with Surface and similar devices since they offer a familiarity the iPad doesn't necessarily have.
This is especially true with the Surface Pro: It's a full Windows PC that is still a relatively sleek tablet with a slim travel keyboard designed with touch typists in mind. That means you can take all the programs you use right now and stick them on something the size of a tablet. Even the entry-level version of Surface running Windows RT offers the more familiar desktop interface (albeit with limited functionality) for people who want a basic desktop.

Something Missing

Microsoft Surface in profileMicrosoft Surface in profileBased on what Microsoft has said, however, the one thing Surface may be missing is the consumer-friendly entry-level price point of $500. That appears to be the magic number for people to buy iPads, and tablets that have been initially priced above that have failed to gain much traction: i.e., RIM's BlackBerry PlayBook and the HTC Jetstream.
Perhaps Microsoft will still meet the $500 price with the 32GB version as does the Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime TF201, but we won't know for sure until Windows RT Surface tablets hit store shelves.
Microsoft is off to a good start with Surface, but we'll have to wait a few months yet to find out if the company's promises will meet consumer expectations.

Reggie Jackson, Johnny Bench: Let Clemens into Hall of Fame

Reggie Jackson, Johnny Bench: Let Clemens into Hall of Fame

Reggie Jackson, who believes baseball turned its back for years to rampant steroid use, told USA TODAY Sports that Roger Clemens deserves to join him in the Hall of Fame in 2013, a sentiment echoed by Hall of Fame catcher Johnny Bench.
Jackson and Bench, who have been critical about the possible induction of steroid users into the Hall of Fame, said that Clemens' acquittal on all charges of lying to Congress in denying use of performance-enhancing drugs should open the door to the game's Cooperstown, N.Y. shrine.
"Here's a guy who took his principles that he believed in, and exposed himself to that kind of ridicule, to prove he was right,'' Jackson told USA TODAY Sports in a telephone interview. "He was proven through the legal system that he was correct. If you can beat Congress and federal judges, buddy, you must have had a pretty strong case.
"Yet, I listen to television today, and TV says that although he was ruled not guilty, he's going to be held accountable in public court, and they doubt seriously he'll ever get into the Hall of Fame.
"I don't understand that. He was ruled not guilty. He beat Congress. Our judicial system says he's not guilty. By that ruling, he should get into the Hall of Fame, regardless of anybody's opinion.''
Bench told USA TODAY Sports that he didn't need a trial to prove Clemens' innocence. He took justice on in his own way. He directly asked Clemens himself years ago whether he took performance-enhancing drugs.
"Roger was straight to the point with me,'' Bench said in a telephone interview, "and he told me he was innocent. That was good enough for me. I didn't need a trial. I wouldn't think he'd lie to me. Now, it's up to the voters.
"I'm sure people will still have some kind of resentment, and people want to keep the purity of [the Hall of Fame], but for me, I'd welcome him into the Hall of Fame.''
Jackson, who says there likely will be Hall of Famers that boycott the ceremony when players linked to steroid use are inducted, believes that Clemens and Barry Bonds belong. They each won their case in federal court, with Bonds only being charged with obstruction of justice, not steroid use. Players who tested positive like Rafael Palmeiro, or admitted to steroid use like Mark McGwire, don't belong in the Hall, Jackson says. The voting bloc has not been kind to many of the game's stars from the height of the steroid era, and several voters have already expressed reservations about voting for Bonds and Clemens.
Yet, with Bonds convicted on the single obstruction charge, Bench isn't sure he belongs in the Hall of Fame. Bonds, after all, is a convicted felon unless he wins his appeal.
"There's always been a little more haze over his name and everything else,'' Bench said. "They're certainly not going to elect [Mark] McGwire, so I don't think they'll vote for Barry. That's just the voting the way it is.
"If [Bonds] was exonerated and everything was clear, it might be different. But there's still pending stuff going on. Until that's worked out, there will be a little hesitancy for all of us.''
There will be plenty more test cases on the ballot. Houston Astros slugger Jeff Bagwell, who never tested positive nor was remotely connected to PEDs in his career, has failed to garner more than 57% of the writers' vote. Sammy Sosa and Mike Piazza, who also never tested positive but who experienced a remarkable increase in size and strength, are on the ballot for the first time this year.
"There's a wavy line there,'' says Jackson. "Some guys will skate away unscathed. Some don't. I'm glad I don't have to resolve it. I'm glad I don't get a vote.''
Said Bench: "There are several guys out there, you can't make a decision on. You don't know what the Commissioner holds in his hand, if there's a basic evidence of some form, or somebody didn't pass the acid test. The Commissioner has to dance around the rain drop. How much do you release, how much do you leak?''
There are no true answers, only confusion, with Hall of Famers not sure any longer who to believe.
"Part of this is our fault,'' Jackson said. "We enjoyed the success of the great home-run race in '98 [with McGwire and Sosa]. It used to be that just two guys [Roger Maris and Babe Ruth] hit 60 homers, then it was four guys that hit 60, and doing it every year. Then, it was like 10 guys who hit 50 homers. It was like, "Whoa!' It got stupid.
"It wasn't just the game's greats. It was Luis Gonzalez (57 in 2001). It was Brady Anderson (50 in 1996). When that happened, we were shocked. Our culture was shocked. We lost our measuring sticks.
"The greatness of the nature we cherished, Hank Aaron, Willie Mays, Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio, Frank Robinson, the names that were so important to us, we lost all of that.
"We all sat back and watched it get out of control. It was like, "OK, now how do we fix it?' [Commissioner] Bud Selig is doing his darnedest trying to correct that, but the horses got loose. They're already out of the gate.''
Yet, for Clemens and Bonds, they should no longer be subjected to the speculation, Jackson says. The gray turned to black and white, he says, once they were found not guilty in federal court.
"You have to really admire what Roger did. He stood up for what he believed in,'' Jackson says. "Here's a guy whose life has been altered, which cost a fortune to buy part of his credibility back, and he did it. He won't get his money back. But he paid for the truth.
"I'd be proud to welcome him into the Hall of Fame.''
